So, I have kind of a funny story. Yesterday morning I put on a pair of maternity pants that I hadn't worn before. They were a pair of khaki's so of course I was thinking I was going to have a nice comfy day at work in my new khaki's....WRONG. As I'm sitting in the car driving to work I'm starting to get more and more squirmy, the baby band on them was so tight and it was driving me nuts. As I was driving I could actually feel quite a bit of movement from Austin. He still feels like popcorn to me, but I could feel a few "pops" every few minutes or so. Naturally I thought it was the coolest thing thinking from this point on I was going to get to feel him and I was excited I had entered into that stage. So I finally make it to work, sit down to start working and within 5 minutes I was begging to take my lunch hour so I could run to Target for an emergency clothes change. Again, the whole time in the car I'm feeling Austin just pop away. I find a comfy dress to change into and BOOM...he was gone, no more pops for the rest of the day. Apparently it was driving Austin nuts too and he had to voice his opinion saying "get this stinkin thing off me woman!". 17 weeks and already the kid is cracking me up.
17 Weeks:
Your baby's skeleton is changing from soft cartilage to bone, and the umbilical cord (his lifeline to the placenta) is growing stronger and thicker. Your baby weighs 5 ounces now, and he's around 5 inches long from head to bottom. He can move his joints, and his sweat glands are starting to develop. (hopefully they're not like daddy's) Your baby will begin to form fat this week. The fat begins to deposit under his skin and is important in heat production and metabolism. At delivery, fat will account for 2-6 percent of your baby's total body weight. (and will make all those chubby parts especially yummy). This will help him maintain his body temperature when he is born. If you were to get an abdominal x-ray (which isn't recommended and could be dangerous), your baby's skeleton would be visible. His movements are becoming stronger and more frequent now. And since practice makes perfect, your baby is sharpening his sucking and swallowing skills in preparation for that first (and second…and third) suckle at your breast or bottle. In fact, most of the survival reflexes that your baby will have at birth are being perfected in utero right now. Your baby is almost certainly listening up by now. In fact, loud noises — the dog barking, the doorbell ringing — will actually startle your baby (and also get him or her used to such noises; for instance, fetuses who regularly hear a dog barking will become babies who sleep right through Koda's outbursts). Your baby's eyes (which have fortunately finished their migration to the front of his or her head) are making small side-to-side movements and can even perceive some light, though the eyelids are still sealed.
And here's some proof that your baby is truly one of a kind (as if you needed any!). Within the next week or so, the pads on your baby's fingertips and toes will become adorned with completely individual swirls and creases (aka fingerprints).
Average weight gain to this point in pregnancy is about five to ten pounds, but don't worry if you are a little off.

ReplyDeleteBTW, Little Austin has great taste like his daddy. The dress from target he helped pick out was super cute. I'm loving him already.
ReplyDeleteWell mother, if you must know.....the pants fit huge, it was the band that they used. It was thick almost like a headband on my stomach. I haven't gained anywhere else besides the belly and boobs :p
ReplyDeleteEric, if Austin's taste are goin to take after yours, we're goin to need to get a much larger place for all 3 of our closets. Lets just hope his shoe size doesn't take after you too.
