Austin's Man Cave

Hey there baby boy!!! We're in the home stretch, we're now 9 months pregnant and you have 4 weeks left. I'm going to say it again, I'm so excited for you to be here. I think you probably are too because this weekend you have felt like there is no room in my belly for you. Your little elbows and knees have been getting in some good jabs. Or maybe you were just so excited about all the yummy food mommy & daddy fed you this weekend. Your momma turned 28 on Saturday and unfortunately you will not be sharing (or taking over) your momma and grandma's birthday.I tried all the tricks in the book, except eating eggplant, you seem to be perfectly happy with your little man cave for right now. Anyways, you had some blueberry pancakes, Kobe's noodles and shrimp, cinnamon rolls from Ikea and your daddy made us a steak kabob last night when we went to visit your Grandma and Grandpa Edwards and your Untie Heather and Uncie Stu. Your aunt and uncle brought a huge bag from the Keys of things for you- you got some very cool looking surfer dude clothes, Nike sock shoes and baseball/sports goodies galore!

Wednesday you and I have an appointment to see the Dr. so they can see how big you are and talk about possibly scheduling your birth day!!! BTW- as soon as I know how big you are, Daddy & I will make sure to pick you out a cute Halloween costume. I hope you don't mind, but I have a feeling this year you'll probably be a pumpkin.

Here's a little picture of Daddy & I from Saturday and from 1 year ago in the Keys. This was actually the trip where we spent 7 hours in the car and came up with your name.

Your Baby- 36 Weeks (9 Months)
Your baby's skull isn't the only soft structure in his little body. Most of your baby's bones and cartilage are quite soft as well (they'll harden over the first few years of life) — allowing for an easier journey as your baby squeezes through the birth canal at delivery (and less prodding and poking for Mom along the way). At 36 weeks pregnant, the skull bones are also not fused together yet so that the head can easily (well, maybe not easily) maneuver through the birth canal. So your little bruiser (who you've now learned won't be bruising you all that much with those soft bones) is now about six pounds (HA!) in weight and measures slightly more than 20 inches in length. Growth will experience a slowdown now, both so your baby will be able to fit the narrow passageway to the outside and also so he or she can store up all the energy needed for delivery. By now, many of your baby's systems are pretty mature, at least in baby terms — and just about ready for life on the outside. Blood circulation, for instance, has been perfected and your baby's immune system has matured enough to protect him or her from infections outside the womb. Other systems, however, still need a few finishing touches. Once such notable example: digestion — which actually won't be fully mature until sometime after birth. Why's that? Inside his little gestational cocoon, your baby has relied on the umbilical cord for nutrition, meaning that the digestive system — though developed — hasn't been operational. So your baby will take the first year or two to bring that system up to speed.
